Trustees visit the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, 12 August 2009
The Amy ‘Wonderful’ Bear Award
The visit was organised by The Sick Kids Friends Foundation.
It was a follow up to an earlier AWB Smiling Wings Day in Perth for children
from the Hospital and their families.
The Sick Kids Friends Foundation helps sick children get better by funding extra medical equipment, improving facilities, financing specialised research and training and providing a wide variety of extra comforts for young patients and their families.
Amy Bears were given to children in the three wards, some of whom had been patients for a long time. Each child was also given an ‘Amy "Wonderful” Bear Award’ for coping so well through the many difficulties they’ve faced and continue to face.
One of the children was Russell, who had also attended the Perth Smiling Wings Day. Maureen Harrison, the Foundation’s Chief Executive said: "Russell's account of his experience [of AWB’s Smiling Wings Day] as part of his guided imagery recall, will not only be a tremendous acknowledgement of the success of what you do but also an inspirational story for new recruits and potential donors to your cause!”
Paintings and drawings on the theme of aviation had been prepared by the children in advance and were on prominent display. The trustees were also shown the children’s Interactive room and, although some children were in isolation rooms, the trustees were able to spend time with many of the children and some of their parents.
