Smiling Wings Day, Elstree Aerodrome, Hertfordshire, Saturday 19 September 2009

The final Smiling Wings Day of the year!

The weather was warm and sunny and the welcome from Elstree Aero Club, who hosted the day with AWB, was no less warm. The event was funded by our principal supporter EADS and pilots from the Club.

Children from the charity Action for Children - Bucks Activity Project were our guests and they were a happy and lively group - excited to be there with their Mums, Dads, siblings and carers.

The day began with a talk on aeroplanes and flight and the children, some of whom were quite knowledgeable, eagerly contributed. After a safety briefing they were shown round an aircraft on the tarmac and then had the chance to sit in a cockpit.

The poor visibility improved by lunchtime and flying began. An excellent buffet was provided by the Club, so while some flew, others had lunch. Three aircraft were available at the beginning so the first group flew quickly, but the pace slowed when only one aircraft became available. This then had to be replaced so the last group did not fly till later in the afternoon. By this time it had become a beautiful clear day, so the wait was well worthwhile.

All the children had great flights and, thanks to the kindness and generosity of the pilots of Elstree Aero Club, a very enjoyable day was had by all.
