World Children’s Fundraising Flight from USA to Germany – August 2010

· A Zebra is flying over the ocean!

On 21 August 2010, "The Flying Zebra" will take off from Minneapolis, USA and fly over Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, England, all the way to Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg.

The Sikorsky S38, known as "The Flying Zebra” or "The Flying Yacht" is 82 years old and still going strong. Many millions of moviegoers have seen "the old lady” in action in the 2004 film "Aviator", about the late billionaire Howard Hughes, where Leonardo DiCaprio flew her at night over Los Angeles and then elegantly landed her by the seashore. This amphibious aircraft has explored and surveyed many of the world’s continents and oceans.

The whole event is being co-ordinated in the UK by Aviation Without Borders, (AWB) who is working closely with its sister organisation in Germany LOG, (Luftfarht ohne Grenzen/Wings of Help). For this historical long-haul flight, "the old lady” will be supported by our technical partner Condor.

Exhibitions and Air Shows

Farnborough International Airshow, 19-25th July 2010

AWB will be present during the public days of this most prestigious aviation event once again. Come and see us on the EADS Stand.

· Smiling Wings Days

Fairoaks Airport, Chobham, Woking, Surrey - 2 August 2010

A group of young people and their carers from The Springboard Project ‘SMILE’ (Sutton Mentoring and Independent Leisure Experiences), based in Sutton, South London will be our guests for the day. ‘SMILE’ is a peer-mentoring scheme for disabled young people in the London Borough of Sutton.

Members and volunteers are most welcome to join us at this event. Please contact the AWB office on 020 3118 1010 or email contact@aviationwithoutborders.org.

Further dates for 2010 ‘Smiling Wings Days’ will be announced in due course.

Smiling Wings Days provide children with disadvantages the opportunity to discover the world of flying through special aviation discovery days, or 'Smiling Wings Days' as they are affectionately called. AWB works closely with many UK charities, organisations and flying clubs and hosts a number of Smiling Wings Days throughout the year at various airfields in the UK.

· Air Cargo Shipments

AWB will continue to provide the logistics for the air freighting of humanitarian aid such as medicines, medical and surgical equipment, and food to various places in the world. The freight is carried mostly on board scheduled flights at preferential rates, thanks to the cooperation of airlines.

AWB assists a number of charities, for example, the UK charity Chain of Hope, with shipments of medical equipment for overseas medical missions.

A current example of this is assisting SARAID in organising and air freighting vital search and rescue equipment and shipping of essential supplies from the UK on behalf of other charities for distribution in disaster-stricken Haiti.

· Child Escorting

During 2010 AWB will continue to provide escorting services for children from such countries as Uganda, Ethiopia and Kenya.

When required, Aviation Without Borders' volunteers will escort children for urgent medical care to and from London by air, thus allowing them to undergo state-of-the-art surgery that they wouldn't otherwise be able to receive in their home country. These requirements often occur at unpredictable times and at short notice.

· Aircraft Missions

Plans continue to support our Dutch sister organisation (LZG) in operating a small light aircraft for humanitarian missions in East Africa.

Amy ‘Wonderful’ Bear’s travel plans

Amy (AWB’s ‘cuddly’ ambassador) is busy, adding to the already impressive list of aircraft she has had the privilege of flying in. If there is an aircraft or a flight anniversary or commemorative flight that you know of and think that Amy could be a part of, then please let AWB know.
